Além de ser o primeiro filme falado de Fritz Lang, era também o trabalho favorito do diretor, em sua fase alemã. Marcou a estréia internacional do ator húngaro Peter Lorre, perfeito no papel do angustiado psicopata. O uso satírico de elementos como criminosos e mendigos remete diretamente à “Ópera de Três Vinténs”, de Bertold Brechet. Uma crítica contundente ao insurgente movimento nazista.
Há várias cenas e sequências antológicas, merece ser citada a do tribunal composto de bandidos, mendigos e outros marginais para julgar o solitário assassino. Com cenários ao mesmo tempo realistas e estilizados, e impressionantes resultados visuais (a caçada e o julgamento), o filme, se não prenuncia a chegada de Hitler e do nazismo, ao menos reflete a atmosfera de mal estar, o ambiente nefasto que existia na sociedade daquela época. Uma autêntica aula de cinema, num espetáculo que até hoje ainda é perturbador.
